  4. Be respectful of everyone’s opinion. There are a lot of view points on this site, please respect everyone’s point of view.

Guidelines for Making Parodies

These guidelines are based off of previous court cases in which the courts ruled in favor of the parody. They do not guarantee that any work you produce will be safe from copyright infringement laws. These are only guidelines on how to create a parody and should be followed but are not required.

  1. Do not claim to be the original.
  2. Make sure that your version is an obvious fake. For example if you are making a parody of Budweiser beer, make sure that the audience can tell that your product is a fake.
  3. Try to make your parody fill one of these purposes: criticism, comment, scholarship, research, news reporting or teaching.
  4. Have your work add a new expression or meaning to the original.
  5. Do not try to damage the reputation of the original.
  6. Make sure the material being used in a parody is related to the material's original usage. For example, if you are making use of the Windows theme music in a parody, make sure the music is being used in a way that is related Windows and not something completely irrelevant to the themes original usage.
